The pool of blood spread around Mona’s head.

Rod rubbed his eyes. God, he was in pain. His shoulder throbbed, and his hand was a mess. If he didn’t get treatment soon, he might never perform surgery again.

He looked over at Emily. She was crouched in a ball on the floor, hugging her knees to her chest. Her sister was over in the far corner, slouched over a bin. And the boy? Well, he was still on the sofa. Rod made a mental note to check on him, but first he had to get rid of Mona’s body before it started to smell.

He turned her head so the arrows wouldn’t pierce him, then lifted her under the armpits and dragged her towards the kitchen. He didn’t want to put her in the hall, as they would have to go there for weapons. Mona had died before giving them the code, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t try to guess it. And they would have to. They needed guns. His shotgun only had two shells remaining, and who knew how many of the Sharayomo were still out there?

“You okay?” he asked Joanna as he passed her.

“Yeah,” she said, wiping a string of vomit from her chin. She was a brave girl. Both sisters were. Some people would have been driven mad by the horrors of what had happened. Hell, Rod was scared shitless, though he tried not to show it.

“I need you to switch off everything electrical,” he said to Joanna. “The generator is running out of fuel. We need to conserve it. That means lights, the fridge, alarm clocks… everything needs to be unplugged or switched off. Those doors are electronically locked. If the power goes out…”

He didn’t finish the sentence.

“How long have we got?” she asked softly.

“Could be hours… could be less.”

“Can’t we refuel it?”

“It’s at the other end of the compound. And the fuel cans are in the storeroom below us. There’s… there’s just no way.”

He saw Joanna glance at her sister, then back to him. “Rod,” she whispered. “What are we gonna do?”

“I don’t know. I wish I had a better answer, but I just don’t know.”

He resumed dragging Mona’s corpse towards the kitchen. Joanna got clumsily to her feet and accompanied him. She pushed the door open and the smell of cooked turkey and cranberry sauce greeted them like an old friend. Rod pulled Mona’s body inside as Joanna held the door.

“Thanks,” he said, laying the dead woman down on the linoleum floor.

“Want me to keep the fridge on?” said Joanna.

“Best not to. We can’t take any chances.”

She nodded, then went from appliance to appliance in the spacious kitchen, diligently unplugging everything she could find.

There was a door with wooden slats next to the fridge. Rod checked inside and found a larder. He stored Mona there, alongside packets of soup and tinned goods. It felt terribly undignified, and the urge to apologize to her corpse was strong.

“I found candles,” said Joanna. Her voice startled him.

He closed the larder door.
